About The Somerset Life Food and Drink Awards
The Somerset Life Food & Drink Awards are designed to champion, highlight and offer a showcase to the good and the great from the regions food & drink industry including local producers & suppliers, small farming businesses, chefs, restaurants, pubs and hoteliers, and people who care about the countryside and the future of our local environment.
The companies nominated are all voted for by you, our readers. We want to know if you’ve received a fantastic meal at your local pub or have been impressed by the stallholders at your farmers’ market or farm shop. The recognition the awards offer make a fantastic and positive impact to local businesses and there has never been a better time to support your local community.
Our judges look for the quality of the nominations rather than quantity and once entries have closed on Friday 1st August our independent panel of judges will then select three finalists in each category using strict criteria and then our judges will visit each venue and select a winner.
All of the finalists will be invited to the prestigious awards ceremony lunch on 1st October where they will find out if they are a winner.
Firstly, we received a Silver Taste of the West Award for the 4th year running – rewarding our commitment to local food. Very, very pleased with that!
Secondly, we were nominated and shortlisted for the Somerset Life Food and Drink Awards 2012 – Restaurant of the Year and Chef Guy Horley as Chef of The Year. We attended the awards lunch at Venue J24 and although we didn’t win , we were delighted to be in the top 3 for both awards. Next year we are going for gold! Next time will not eat for 2 days before we go – large portions..
Wednesday evening we had a group of French customers who enjoyed their meal and told us that they had changed their ideas about English food – saying it was “ a little piece of France in England” Praise indeed..
Saturday a wedding – for Peter & Kerry -our last of the season ( another blog to come)
Sunday - traditional Sunday lunch and then a book launch in the afternoon for our very own Abigail Willis –who is part of our Clavelshay Barn family, being married to Alex our restaurant manager/ author of film noir and cinematography.
Abigail has written a book -“ London gardens A-Z “ – which is no mean feat living in rural Somerset and meaning lots of trips to London. It is a fantastic book and we wish Abigail every success with it.
The book launch took the form of a traditional cream tea – scones (no sultanas by request) clotted cream and strawberry jam), chocolate brownies, lemon drizzle cake, carrot cake - beautifully made by Brad and Guy. Alex masterminded a synchronised popping of corks for a toast to Abigail and everyone had a great time - we are very proud to have been involved.
There has been a few issues with the links for the Somerset Life Food & Drink Awards competition. HERE is the correct one. There is still time to vote, so if you have a spare moment, we would very much appreciate if you nominate Clavelshay Barn for the Restaurant of the Year and for our fabulous chef Guy Horley for Chef of the Year.
