We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to live in Somerset, a beautiful county which has an abundance of great produce and exceptional producers. One of these producers, Stream Farm, is literally on our doorstep and we were lucky enough to visit them the other day. I knew about Stream Farm but was completely bowled over by its location and the enthusiasm of its owners.
The farm is set in an idyllic valley on the Quantock Hills and is run as an organic farm. Their produce of Dexter beef, lamb, trout, free range chicken, apple juice and spring water is as natural as you could ever get.
Not only do the owners, James & Henrietta Odgers, run the farm successfully, but they also have an amazing vision. Their vision is that the British countryside would be better served by smaller farms selling produce direct to the consumer, rather than larger farms selling to supermarkets.
Despite having no farming experience when they bought the farm 10 years ago, James & Henrietta have turned it into a model share farming practice. They have started small business enterprises on the farm, each to be run by a young couple, with the aim of handing each one on, once they become profitable. The couples then go off and start their own business under the Stream Farm umbrella.
The farm sells its produce at Farmers markets, shows, and direct to restaurants. We buy their free range chicken, trout, apple juice and sparkling water.
