I was very sad to hear the news that Stuart & Goody Scriven are closing the door of their butchers shop in North Petherton on Saturday 27 September. Not only because they have been a great help to us in our business, supplying us with the best local meat but also because of a connection to my family.
Stuart’s family farmed at Wellington, Somerset and when he left school he wanted to become a butcher. He worked for Stillmans in Taunton and then worked for my father in his shop, L J King Taunton as an apprentice, training at Yeovil College on day release.
Stuart and Goody opened their shop in North Petherton in 1966 and have been there ever since, clocking up 47 Christmases there. Having grown up living over a butcher’s shop, I know what a butchers Christmas is like – chaos up until Christmas Eve, then you are too tired to enjoy Christmas like a “normal” family.
The catering side of the business has been taken on by Stuart’s brother David and will be run from his shop in Langport, and we will continue to buy from him.
We wish Stuart and Goody every happiness in their retirement, spending time with their children, grandchildren and enjoying more holidays with friends.
Enjoy life – you deserve it!
