Gemma & Andy's Festival Style Wedding

IMG_7831

Gemma & Andy came to see me only 6 months ago and immediately booked their wedding reception for 31 May 2014. They are a very relaxed easy-going couple and wanted their wedding to reflect that. They love music and going to festivals and wanted a festival style atmosphere complete with Glastonbury type flags and pie and mash. No problem!

After a very showery week, the Saturday dawned bright and sunny – beautiful at 6am when I got up.

May2014-028 IMG_8563

Gemma and her bridesmaids stayed with me the night before and got ready here in the morning. After a glass of Bucks Fizz with breakfast, the house resounded with the sound of champagne corks, laughter and hairdryers! The bridesmaids were all ready and waiting for Gemma to appear, just as her father arrived to see her walk down the stairs in her stunning dress. She looked so beautiful that we were all in tears and I felt so privileged to witness such a special moment.

Off they went to their service at Woodlands Castle and the sun came out when they arrived back at Clavelshay Barn to begin the festivities.

Canapes made by our fantastic Chef Phi Verden were enjoyed by all together with glasses of Clavelshay Fizz.

The evening went with a bang with great live music from “Living for the city” -  a 7 piece band from London. Sax, trumpet, keyboard and fab vocals – they had everyone dancing all night. About midnight, one of my girls asked me if I could sew as there was a trouser crisis. One of the guests had split his trousers down the seam after over loading his pockets with phone, camera, wallet and after doing lunges on the dance floor! I fetched needle & thread and Astra sewed the trousers up beautifully and asked him to moderate his lunges for the rest of the night. Note to self – buy emergency sewing kit!

There was another interesting incident involving flaming Sambucca but I promised I would not mention the details (Luke).

A very happy day – with great atmosphere and lovely people.

Thank you Gemma & Andy for letting us share your very special day - it was a real pleasure and we wish you every happiness in the future.

WEDDINGS

What a fantastic year for weddings – with perfect weather for our lovely couples. So many wonderful weddings it's difficult to choose a few as they all were so much fun.

From Kendall & Stephen's fun filled wedding that ended up with Stephen's best man, a 6ft 2 ins Marine, asleep under a table in the marquee on Sunday morning. To... Cara & Grant‘s triumphant wedding – a traditional pole marquee which looked amazing. Grant had everyone in tears as he said it was his dream to get married here – he had played in our fields as a child when visiting his grandparents nearby. And, so many more fabulous weddings, you can read all about them here »

The wedding that stands out the most for us in 2013 is Stephanie & Tom's beautiful 'Country Tea Party' themed wedding which was featured on Rock My Wedding and photographed by the lovely Rachel Hudson.

st_003 From the moment Sue meet the lovely couple, she knew that their wedding was going to be fantastic - and my goodness was she right! Here's Sue's description of the wonderful, wonderful wedding...

The sun almost started to come out from the behind the clouds just as the guests arrived and the wind died down. The jazz band played as Tom waited nervously for the arrival of his bride. Stephanie looked absolutely stunning in her beautiful dress and as she walked across the lawn on the arm of her brother Courtney to Tom, the clouds parted and the sun shone brilliantly. There was not a dry eye in the place! As Stephanie reached Tom, the only sounds to be heard were birds singing and a woodpecker drumming – an unforgettable moment.

st_068

And, another 'not a dry eye in the place' unforgettable moment....

After the meal, it was eventually time for the first dance – an important moment on any wedding day but especially so on this day. Stephanie’s father, George Williams who sadly died 8 years ago was lead singer with a motown/soul group called The Tymes. So Tom & Stef’s poignant choice of song for their first dance was one of his songs – famous in the 60’s and called “Wonderful, Wonderful ”.

IMG_4131

Then time for live music with local band “Snappa” (snappa.co.uk) who were brilliant and had everyone dancing all night – especially Stef’s Grandad, who at 89 was keen to dance with all the pretty girls! There was even a fantastic dance off between the woman and men in the wedding party, Steph’s brother Courtney showed them how it was all done when he busted out a few Michael Jackson moves. No-one wanted the party to end including us!

WORKSHOPS

fireside-cheese

So many great workshops this year! From Italian Bread Making to Cheese Making, Smoking & Curing, Food Photography, Printmaking, Christmas Wreath Making. We were amazed at how much we learnt, and how much fun we had.

We are looking forward to all our 2014 Workshops which will be recommencing in January. You can find all the details for our workshops here »

POP-UP RESTAURANTS

IMG_8557

2013 saw the start of our very popular Pop-Up Restaurants. From the Italian Night, to the outdoor Pizza Night, and the splendid Somerset Supper which celebrated our love for fresh, locally produced, delicious Somerset food.

We have some exciting Pop-Up Restaurant nights planned for 2014. So make sure you pop by our blog in early 2014 to find out the details.

 MUSIC NIGHTS

Another extremely popular event we had in 2013 was our fun live Music Nights. We were thrilled to host a number of talented local bands including Bare Bones Trio from Bridgwater - the band responsible for causing a re-enactment of a scene from the film Big Night . The one where all the customers in the restaurant get up and dance. A night to remember!

We have many more fun Music Nights planned for 2014, stay tuned for details.

PRIVATE PARTIES

Lots of them and all a pleasure. From laughter-filled Corporate Christmas/Workshop parties (photos coming soon!), to sweet engagement parties, family celebrations and the lovely Sarah's 21st Birthday Party. We had a wonderful time at each and every one of them. Thank you so much for choosing Clavelshay Barn and for letting us share your very special days with you – it was an absolute pleasure.

Which brings me to the New Year –  with lots to look forward to. Thank you all for your support in 2013 – we look forward to seeing you in 2014.

We wish you all a Happy & healthy New Year

Weddings 2013

We have come to the end of the wedding season at Clavelshay – it has been so hectic that I haven’t had time to think, let alone blog!

What a fantastic summer – with perfect weather for our lovely couples. Am just looking back on the past couple of months and have some wonderful memories – here are just a few…

A perfect June day for Paul & Liz – sunshine all the day – and I have to say Clavelshay has never looked  better  with all the flowers in full bloom. A small but perfectly formed wedding!

IMG_5065 IMG_5104 IMG_5102 IMG_5103July saw Kendall & Stephen getting married – a fun filled wedding with plenty of laughter. Stephen is in the Royal Marines and looked extremely smart in uniform, as did his fellow Marines.  One of the highlights for me was finding the best man, a 6ft 2 ins Marine, asleep under a table in the marquee on Sunday morning. He had asked if he could sleep there as he had missed all the lifts home- still surprised me though.

We will be sharing more beautiful photos from Kendall and Stephen's wedding taken by local talented photographer Aran Jefferies, so make sure you pop back!

August2013-008

A busy, busy August, with John & Sarah starting it off with a lovely intimate wedding for just under 50 people. Live music from Bare Bones Trio gave everyone such a great evening that no one wanted to leave.

Carolyn & Graham ‘s wedding was a classic! They had been together for 23 years and finally got around to getting married.  Another beautiful sunny day with an evening to remember, with music from The Man from Funkle echoing  across the valley on a starlit night.

August2013-003

The following day we had a superb wedding with Kayleigh & Tim organising it all in 9 weeks. Their dream meal was – pie and mash with mushy peas & gravy. All made here by Head Chef Guy – I have never ever seen such clean plates in my life ! The weather was not so good but did not affect the mood at all – a great party -  I got to bed at 4.30am!

August2013-049 August2013-051 August2013-018 August2013-020

September brought  a very special wedding with Mark & Amie. They think of Clavelshay as their special place as they started coming here when they first met. Mark proposed here earlier this year and I was delighted when they told me they wanted their wedding reception here.  Amie said it was a perfect day and everything they had dreamed of... And Mark still wears the best after shave of all my customers…

A quieter end to the season with a small family celebration for Jane & David, which was enjoyed by all.

We are happy to cater for all tastes and that is what makes weddings special here – every single one is completely different and very individual. That is why I love it!

We're a bit behind in sharing all the photos from the fantastic events and weddings we have being having at Clavelshay. It's been a mad couple of months, full of memorable fun moments. lots of beautiful wedding details, great music and of course, delicious food. Over the coming weeks, we will be posting all the photos and sharing some of the funny, beautiful, crazy moments we have experienced this summer - stay tuned.

In the meantime, we thought we would quickly share a recent feature of one of our stunning weddings at Clavelshay on the popular wedding blog, Rock My Wedding. The beautiful wedding of Stephanie and Tom - the lovely couple from Bath who were married at Clavelshay  in Spring....

00094

Yes – that’s right…this wedding has horses. I can virtually hear the ooohs and awwws from here. I think Steph and Tom’s venue may be one of the most idyllic I’ve ever seen and luckily the British weather held out for their ceremony. Everything just looks so beautiful bathed in the Spring sunshine.

Steph and Tom seemed to keep the music pumping, the food coming and the drink flowing all day long – they even had a late-night campfire with marshmallow toasting. I know. AMAZING.

Steph the Bride: The perfect venue was at Clavelshay Barn, North Petherton near Taunton. Tom and I had spotted it online and thought it was worth a visit and were definitely not disappointed. We knew on the first visit that it would be perfect. Winding country roads, humming birds, sweeping hills, cows and quaint country houses , beautiful gardens … and a chance to make something truly our own. Sue who owns the venue was also a lovely and very genuine host who went above and beyond to help us create our special day.

Beautiful People, Beautiful day, Beautiful memories made.

Steph and Tom are a very sweet and special couple… I met them for their couple shoot in Bath a month or so ago and after chatting about their day was so excited – and I had every reason to be. Their wedding day was in the most beautiful setting at the fabulous Clavelshay Barn in Taunton, Somerset…. on a farm, surrounded by forest and hills it made for a very unique venue in my eyes…. everything about the day was so relaxed, and quite understated but blew me away with the love and people involved. The day was all set for an outdoor ceremony but rain in the morning gave us all a bit of worry but a lot of positive thinking I think from everyone the sun shone big and bright when we needed it to. I captured Steph getting ready in the on sight cottage with her mum, mother-in-law, bridemaids (one which travelled all the way from Brazil to be there) and her adorable little niece. Chrissey – one of her bridesmaids and best friends was responsible for the stunning flowers on the day... Tom & Stephanie's Wonderful, Wonderful Wedding

When I first met Tom & Stephanie more than a year ago I knew they would have a fantastic wedding at Clavelshay Barn – sometimes you just get that feeling – and I was right!

I woke at 6am to rain beating on the window but that old country saying “rain before seven, fine before eleven ” is usually true and the rain stopped mid-morning. The bride and her girlfriends arrived early in the morning and my house was filled with the sounds of champagne corks popping, glasses clinking, hairdryers and chatter…

StephTom-048 StephTom-046 StephTom-073

Meanwhile the marquee was ready and being filled with beautiful flowers – peonies, roses and lovely scented stocks. Guy and I were busy in the kitchen preparing the canapés for the afternoon – sandwiches, smoked salmon blinis, cheese scones, scones with jam & clotted cream, chocolate eclairs ... Bob had the hog cooking on the spit ready for the wedding breakfast – all systems go ...

IMG_4019 IMG_4025 IMG_5427

We all helped put out the chairs on the lawn for the ceremony and it looked beautiful, just waiting for the guests to arrive.

The sun almost started to come out from the behind the clouds just as the guests arrived and the wind died down. The jazz band played as Tom waited nervously for the arrival of his bride. There was not a dry eye in the place! As Stephanie reached Tom, the only sounds to be heard were birds singing and a woodpecker drumming – an unforgettable moment. A moving ceremony and then natural confetti throwing and then ... Time for Pimms and canapés, photographs and more Pimms.

StephTom-104 IMG_4069 StephTom-112 StephTom-015

Guests made their way to the marquee where the order of the day was the speeches first and then the wedding breakfast. The hog was cooked to perfection by Bob, expertly carved by Guy and Bob and enjoyed by all.
